The SharkNet user interface provides two basic functionalities -- Viewing Tickets and Submitting New Tickets. When submitting a new ticket, the user assigns a Priority, provides Configuration Information and then describes the problem. It is also possible to Upload Files along with the submission of the ticket. Once the information has been provided, the user clicks on the Submit button, and the ticket is forwarded to a Wireshark support engineer at CACE Technologies.

Wireshark Official Releases and the SharkNet Maintenance Component

Wireshark is under constant development for the introduction of new features and bug fixes. From time-to-time we create a Wireshark Official Release. A Wireshark Official Release corresponds to a branch off of the main Wireshark development trunk.

When a Wireshark Official Release branch is created, Wireshark development continues along the main development trunk without affecting the branch corresponding to the Wireshark Official Release. After the branch is made, a significant amount of work is done to ensure that the Official Release is bug free, including a number of pre-releases. Once the Wireshark Official Release is announced, it is downloaded by hundreds of thousands of users who are more than willing to provide feedback on the current release.

This process ensures that the Wireshark Official Releases are extremely stable. In spite of all of the effort that goes into a Wireshark Official Release, it is not unusual for our users to discover bugs. Normally, these bugs are only addressed in the next Wireshark Official Release which may be months away. The maintenance component of the SharkNet program will provide bug fixes (and occasional feature enhancements) to the current Wireshark Official Release, thereby providing SharkNet customers with Updates to the current Wireshark Official Release. These Updates are only distributed to SharkNet customers.

  • The SharkNet Enterprise Maintenance and Support Program is applicable to corporate users who are running the current Wireshark Official Release.
  • The SharkNet Enterprise Maintenance component provides corporate users with an opportunity to include bug fixes and, in some cases, new features into the latest Wireshark Official Release.

Windows-based Wireshark Build Environment

Making Wireshark development easier. Like any large software project, building Wireshark depends on many components and applications. Setting up the required development environment can be daunting and time-consuming. In order to make things easier for those new to Wireshark development, CACE Technologies provides Wireshark Jumpstart. Wireshark Jumpstart is a setup wizard that guides you through the process of creating your own Wireshark development environment. At the end of the setup process it can even compile Wireshark for you!

Wireshark Jumpstart is available on CD, and includes a short video tutorial.
