Why can I no longer find WiFi Pilot on your Web site?

Like every technology company, Riverbed makes occasional changes to its product and service offerings. As part of this process, we have ended sales of WiFi Pilot. We recommend Cascade Pilot Personal Edition (formerly CACE Pilot) as a substitute product. Existing customers can visit our support site for product support options.

What is the WiFi Pilot Solution?

WiFi Pilot is a bundled solution that combines the 802.11 capture capabilities of AirPcap™, the spectrum-level visibility of Wi-Spy™, the visualization, drill-down, and reporting features of Cascade Pilot Personal Edition, and the vast protocol dissection capabilities of Wireshark®.

The bundle is intended for any network professional engaged in 802.11 WLAN management, design, security, compliance, and troubleshooting who needs a complete and very affordable collection of tools to assist in these tasks. With the WiFi Pilot Solution, you can:

  • Measure wireless channel utilization from the data and spectrum points of view simultaneously
  • Ensure safe , compliant, optimized operation of wireless networks
  • Easily identify rogue wireless networks and stations
  • Secure your 802.11 WLANS from intruders and other threats
  • Instantly detect 802.11 performance bottlenecks
  • Pinpoint and drill-down to discover the source of network anomalies
  • Discover non-802.11 sources of interference that impact on the performance of your WLAN
  • Troubleshoot advanced issues like malfunctioning roaming with multiple AirPcap adapters
  • Provide professional, detailed reporting to clients and managers

Does WiFi Pilot work on a Windows 7 machine (32 and 64 bit)?

Yes. WiFi Pilot v2.2 works for both the 32 and 64bit versions of the Windows 7 OS:

What are “Views”?

Views are the core analysis and visualization paradigm in WiFi Pilot (and Cascade Pilot Personal Edition). WiFi Pilot contains over 35 Views, providing a broad range of MAC-level protocol support for wireless networks. Views consist of a collection of display components called Charts.

What does it mean when you say that WiFi Pilot is fully integrated with Wireshark?

There are several aspects to the full integration associated with Wireshark and WifF Pilot. First, WiFi Pilot has been designed by a team that includes Wireshark's creator, Gerald Combs and is the only product in the industry to offer full integration with Wireshark. This integration makes Wireshark's extensive collection of capture and display filters easily available throughout WiFi Pilot.

Then, WiFi Pilot makes it possible to select a traffic source (live or trace file) and send it to Wireshark, making Wireshark's prodigious dissector library for deep packet analysis available for ready use within the program.

You also can process very large trace files by isolating interesting portions of the trace file using WiFi Pilot's powerful drill-down feature before sending selected packets to Wireshark.

Finally, WiFi Pilot works with standard pcap files. Trace files created by Wireshark and other open source tools, including pcap files generated on Linux or Mac systems, can be opened easily with WiFi Pilot.

How large a packet trace is WiFi Pilot capable of opening?

If the file is not enormous (let's say smaller than 30 GB) and your hard disk is pretty fast, you have a good chance of being able to open the file with a View like “Bandwidth Over Time”, “Capture Summary” or “Top MAC Sources” in a reasonable amount of time. At that point, you can highlight portions of the Charts and click on “Send to File” to export the data to smaller files.

My Anti-Virus utility is warning me that Pilot is infected when I try to install or run it. After installing, I am still prompted for the 'setup.msi' file. I downloaded Pilot from your website, it is really infected?

Our Pilot applications are occasionally associated with false positives by anti-virus scanners due to the security used in our application. We suggest deactivating your A/V software before installing Pilot, after which A/V can be re-enabled. In some instances an exclusion must be permanently applied within the A/V program for the specific files triggering the false positives. For your safety, all of our installers are thoroughly scanned for malware before being placed on our website for download. MD5 hash codes are also available as double-check and can be found in your 'My Account' page when downloading the Pilot installer.

Below are links from two well-known anti-virus companies with information on setting up exclusions. If you have a different brand of A/V, please contact your manufacturer for additional assistance:
